I was commissioned by the charity 'The British Forces Foundation' to create a work around the theme of the remembrance poppy. For me the poppy is a very powerful symbol, a symbol not only of remembrance, but gratitude and unity. I wanted to develop the painting further to show the damaging and complicated effects of the war in Afghanistan, I used the opium poppy as a signifier of the wider issues that have caused and prolonged this war and as a reminder of the economic and social implications. I included the army boot prints to represent the human scale and human cost of the war.
The name is taken from a poem called 'The Soldier' by Rupert Brooke who was one of the Dymock poets.
